You applied for the job. You sent your CV. And then โ nothing. No call. No email. Just silence.
This happens to thousands of job seekers in Sri Lanka every month. And in many cases, the reason is not that they are underqualified. It is that their CV made a poor first impression โ or worse, got filtered out before a human ever read it.
The frustrating part is that most of these mistakes are completely avoidable. They are not about lacking experience or credentials. They are about presentation, attention to detail, and understanding what Sri Lankan employers actually look for.
If you have already read our guide on how to write a CV in Sri Lanka and our breakdown of what to include in each CV section, this article is the final check โ the most common errors that slip through even when people think they have done everything right.
Why These Mistakes Matter More Than You Think
A hiring manager in a medium-sized Sri Lankan company might receive 80 to 150 CVs for a single opening. They spend an average of 20 to 30 seconds on an initial scan. In that time, they are not reading carefully โ they are looking for reasons to keep reading or reasons to move on.
A single formatting issue, a vague personal statement, or a file sent in the wrong format can be enough to end your application before it has really begun. That is harsh, but it is also fixable โ once you know what the problems are.

Build My CV Free โThe 5 Most Common CV Mistakes
This is one of the most common โ and most damaging โ mistakes. When you send a .doc or .docx file, your carefully formatted CV can look completely different on the employer's computer. Different versions of Microsoft Word, different fonts installed, different operating systems โ all of these can shift your layout, break your columns, or turn your clean design into a jumbled mess.
One Sri Lankan HR manager shared that she receives at least 30% of CVs as Word files, and many of them open with corrupted formatting. The CV that looked perfect on your screen arrives with overlapping text, missing bullet points, and scrambled spacing. Even if your content is excellent, the visual impression is poor โ and a poor visual impression in 20 seconds is very hard to recover from.
There is also a practical issue: Word files can be edited. While most employers would not do this, some candidates worry โ rightly โ that a Word CV does not feel final and official in the way a PDF does.
Always save and send your CV as a PDF. On Windows, go to File โ Save As โ choose PDF. On Mac, File โ Print โ Save as PDF. On Google Docs, File โ Download โ PDF Document. Name the file professionally: Firstname_Lastname_CV.pdf. This one change alone will make your application look more professional immediately.
The personal statement is the first text a recruiter reads after your name. It should immediately communicate who you are professionally and what value you bring. Instead, most Sri Lankan CVs open with something like this:
"A hardworking, motivated, and dedicated individual seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation where I can utilise my skills and grow as a professional."
"Finance executive with 3 years of experience in management accounts and financial reporting for manufacturing companies in Sri Lanka. Skilled in SAP ERP and advanced Excel. Seeking a senior finance analyst role to contribute to data-driven business decisions."
The first version is so common it has become invisible. Every recruiter has read it hundreds of times and it tells them nothing specific. The second version is specific, names the industry, mentions tools, and gives a clear idea of the candidate's level and goal.
Rewrite your personal statement to answer three questions: Who are you professionally? (role + years of experience) What are you good at? (specific skills or achievements) What are you looking for? (the type of role). Keep it to 3โ4 sentences and tailor it slightly for each application. Read our full guide on how to write a CV in Sri Lanka for more examples of strong personal statements.
This is the single most impactful improvement most Sri Lankan job seekers can make to their work experience section. There is a fundamental difference between describing what your job was and describing what you actually accomplished in it.
Most CVs list responsibilities โ what the job required you to do. But employers already know what an accountant does, what a salesperson does, what an admin officer does. What they want to know is what you specifically did with that role. Did you improve anything? Did you handle something difficult? Did you deliver results?
"Responsible for managing customer accounts, handling complaints, and preparing monthly reports for management."
"Managed 45 customer accounts with a 94% satisfaction rate. Reduced average complaint resolution time from 5 days to 2 days by introducing a new ticketing system. Prepared and presented monthly performance reports to senior management."
The difference is specificity and numbers. You do not need exact figures for everything โ even approximate numbers like "approximately 40 clients" or "reduced by around 30%" are far better than no numbers at all.
Go through each bullet point in your work experience section and ask: "So what?" If you managed accounts โ how many? If you increased sales โ by how much? If you trained staff โ how many people? If you reduced costs โ what was the saving? Adding even one number per job gives your experience credibility and makes it memorable.
This one sounds trivial, but it makes a real impression โ and not a good one. Email addresses like coolkasun99@gmail.com, princessmanori@yahoo.com, or lion_king_2003@hotmail.com tell the recruiter something about you before they have read a single line of your CV.
In a professional context, your email address is part of your personal brand. It signals attention to detail, self-awareness, and professionalism. These are all qualities employers look for โ and an unprofessional email quietly signals the opposite before you have had a chance to show your actual capabilities.
This mistake is more common than you might think. It shows up regularly on applications from fresh graduates who have been using the same email since school, and it is one of the easiest fixes possible.
Create a new, professional Gmail account using some variation of your name: kasun.perera@gmail.com, k.perera@gmail.com, or kasunpereralk@gmail.com. It takes five minutes and costs nothing. Use this email address for all professional correspondence, including job applications, LinkedIn, and any formal communications.
There are two common length problems with Sri Lankan CVs โ and they are equally damaging in opposite ways.
Too long: Some candidates send 4, 5, or even 6-page CVs filled with every club they joined, every training they attended, and every single duty from every job they have ever held. This is exhausting to read. A recruiter doing an initial 20-second scan will not read it โ they will see a wall of text and move on. More pages does not mean more impressive. It means less focused.
Too short: A one-paragraph CV with just your name, one job, and a list of three skills is the other extreme. It leaves the recruiter with no real picture of who you are or what you have done. Even for fresh graduates, there is usually enough content โ education results, internships, skills, achievements, activities โ to fill a single well-structured page.
5-page CV listing every school prize since age 10
Half-page CV with just name, one job, and three skills
0โ5 years experience: 1 page
5โ10 years experience: 1โ2 pages
10+ years experience: 2 pages max
If your CV is too long: cut older, less relevant roles to 2โ3 bullet points, remove primary school details, trim hobbies and interests to only what is truly relevant, and cut any filler sentences. If your CV is too short: check our full guide on what to include in each CV section โ you are likely missing education details, skills, or achievements that would strengthen it significantly.
Bonus Mistakes Worth Mentioning
Beyond the five main mistakes, here are a few smaller issues that come up often enough to mention:
- Spelling and grammar errors. One typo can be forgiven. Multiple errors suggest carelessness โ which is not a quality any employer wants. Always proofread, and ask someone else to check it too.
- Using a casual or unprofessional photo. If you include a photo in your Sri Lankan CV, it must be a proper professional headshot. A holiday photo, a group photo cropped to show just your face, or a casual selfie all create a poor impression. Plain background, professional attire, facing the camera directly.
- Listing referees who have not agreed. Always โ without exception โ contact your referees before listing them. An employer calling a referee who has no idea you listed them is deeply embarrassing and can cost you the job offer.
- Not tailoring the CV at all. Sending the exact same CV to every employer without any adjustment is a missed opportunity. Even changing the personal statement slightly to reflect the specific role makes a meaningful difference.
